"This morning's announcement by the government of Israel," Clinton said, "is counterproductive to our efforts to resume negotiations between the parties."

The White House added that it was "deeply disappointed" by the Israeli decision.

"Each side in the dispute between the Palestinians and Israelis should take steps that bring them closer to direct negotiations to resolve the issues that stand in the way of Palestinian statehood and a secure Jewish state of Israel," spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One. "When either side takes unilateral action that makes it harder to achieve that, we make our views known."

Israel's Interior Ministry said the homes would be built in Gilo, a sprawling Jewish enclave in southeast Jerusalem, and construction could begin in two months. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ruled out any freeze in settlement construction, a key demand of Palestinians to returning to talks, raising tensions and challenging the U.S. and other international mediators further after last week's Palestinian move to seek recognition as a state and a seat in the United Nations.

The announcement drew swift condemnation from the Palestinians, along with the European Union and United Nations, who along with Russia have been working with the U.S. to head off the diplomatic crisis at the U.N.

Standing alongside Clinton, Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Portas called for renewed talks on the basis of parameters laid down last week by the "quartet" of mediators. But he acknowledged that Israel's move Tuesday amounted to a setback.

Fiercely opposed by Israel and the U.S., the membership bid needs at least nine votes to succeed and no vetoes. Washington has pledged to veto the resolution if it comes to a vote, yet has hoped to avoid such a scenario by enlisting other countries against the Palestinian plan and diverting attention back toward negotiations after almost a year-long hiatus.

Expressing some frustration, Clinton said "we have been here before, over many years."

We are going to discuss some of the different types of businesses on the net and how they make their money. We will then discuss some basic "internet business models" you can use to make money online as many people still don't understand the concept of these business models. There are only four basic types of companies doing business with any impact in cyberspace today:

1.Large Corporations (A.K.A. "Fat Cats")

Many of these companies don't do anything to promote online, perhaps thinking their URL and external promotions are sufficient. And they are probably often correct in approaching the net this way. The ones that do promote online prefer to purchase banner advertising on high traffic sites; a tactic that apparently pays off (We are talking here about huge companies like Pennzoil, Nike, CNN, etc.).

2.Medium Sized, Savvy Businesses (A.K.A."Risk Takers")

The companies referred to here are the electronic cowboys like Yahoo (the search engine), Netscape (the browser) and Netcom (the ISP). These companies took a very different approach to business on the net hoping it would pay big dividends in the end. Many failed, but a few succeeded and grew to enormous size, such as the ones listed above.

Yahoo for example, gave away free listings anticipating people would come and the net would "catch on" with the general public. They lost a lot of money with no revenue stream in the beginning, but once the internet grew, they could charge big dollars for advertising on sites with as many as 15 million hits every day. They got so big they were able to go public and make millions with their stock offering.

Yahoo took a big risk and a loss in the beginning only to reap huge rewards in the end, and the same thing happened with Netscape. They gave their software away to become a dominant force and create a monopoly on web browsers and then made their money by selling advertising packages, and co-partnering with other products later. A risky strategy that has paid in the billions.

3.Small Inexperienced Companies (A.K.A. "Gold Rush Co.")

These are small companies run by individuals who are inexperienced in traditional business or the ways of the internet. They are of the "gold rush" mentality and make the same miscalculations made by inexperienced people in any business venture.

These business owners often think there is one secret to success. They think if only they could just find that one trick, their work would be done and they could then lie on the beach with an ever-growing bank account. But as we will see, there isn't any one big secret, just a whole bunch of little ones!

4.Small Savvy Companies (A.K.A "Winners")

The "winners" are smaller companies run by experienced business people who exhibit a high level of awareness and hard work promoting their website. These companies are currently having the best success on the Web, just as this type of business owner is having the most success in your local neighborhood. They usually start as one-man operations and can grow enormously into outfits with many employees.

But whatever approach you decide to take, learn from others' mistakes. Don't re-invent the wheel. If you try to, you are taking a big risk. Model your business after another that has already proven to be successful and yours likely will be too.

Some keys of any successful product or service:

1.Go after a very specific "niche" market (I did this with most of my online businesses). Try to offer a specialty product or service that is generally unavailable through traditional retail channels. It is critical that the target market be specifically identified and located online.

2.Go after the general public - something everybody wants and try for high volume, not the profit margin or specialty product angle. Example: An online CD store with a selection like no other and better pricing to boot.

In my opinion, running two or three (or more) websites and targeting a niche for each one is the easiest way to make money on the net. Everyone is looking for the "big buck" makers and often niche markets are ignored. This is how I have made most of my money online.

I offered something in demand for a small market, and expected only to make $20-50,000 a year from it. But I soon learned that if I set everything up to be completely automated, I could run three or four (or even more) businesses this size in only a few hours a day. By combining several small incomes like that, it is easy to earn in excess of $200,000 a year, all for investing about an hour a day (per business) now that everything is mostly fully automated (as I teach in my internet marketing course).

If you really want to "retire" after you set up your businesses, hire a manager to work a few hours a day to take care of the daily chores that need to be completed. This is how I started. I ran everything myself at first, then got so busy I had to hire someone part-time, then in less than 1 year, had to hire 3 more people full-time just to handle the daily operations of the 2.4 million dollars in business I do between my four online businesses.

So when you grow a little, hire an employee to run your daily operations. I know many homemakers with kids who would be thrilled at the opportunity to bring home fifteen grand a year... and often have lots of free time between 10am and 3pm when their kids are in school. Your help could be doing all the routine chores and you could be traveling around the world or just sitting on your patio knowing you're making $500 to $1,000 a day doing absolutely nothing. This is not a "pipe-dream"... with today's technology you really can do it (heck, I do! -- although I have to admit, I love to work, so I work a lot).

Florida uses fast starts to overwhelm opponents (AP)

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Florida forced two turnovers and scored three touchdowns against Kentucky, all in the first quarter. That kind of fast start is just what the Gators like.

"We came out, established momentum and took the game over," Florida offensive guard Omar Hunter said. "We wanted to come out early and take the momentum from them."

The Gators have outscored their opponents a combined 54-3 in the opening quarter this season and were up 21-0 against Kentucky when the Wildcats just barely squeezing in a 24-yard field goal as time expired in the first quarter.

Florida (4-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) went on to beat Kentucky 48-10 on Saturday night and moved up three spots to No. 12 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday.

The fast starts have paid dividends. The Gators have outscored 161-36 altogether and haven't trailed once during their 4-0 start to the season under new coach Will Muschamp.

Grabbing a big lead early in games has allowed them to rely on speedy running backs Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey to keep their opponents at bay.

Demps and Rainey combined for 262 yards against the Wildcats, and the Gators finished with 405 yards on the ground, their sixth-best single-game performance in school history and most since a 466-yard performance against New Mexico in 1989.

It's good preparation as Florida faces the meat of its schedule. No. 3 Alabama visits Gainesville on Saturday, and the Gators will travel to No. 1 LSU and Auburn before the annual meeting with Georgia in Jacksonville to close out October.

"We're 4-0 and very pleased," coach Will Muschamp said. "We have a lot of things to work on, but we are pleased with where we are."

Florida's early game success is partly due to offensive coordinator Charlie Weis' scripting of a few drives to start each game. The Gators drove 80 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of their 33-23 win against Tennessee on Sept. 17.

But the Wildcats managed to trip them up a bit in the first two drives of their first road trip of the season. On the first drive of the game, Florida went three-and-out for just the fourth time all season, and the second drive didn't prove to be much better.

A fumble by the Wildcats provided a burst of energy for Florida. Josh Clemons lost the ball on second-and-1 at the Kentucky 45, and John Brantley hit Gerald Christian on a 45-yard touchdown pass across the middle on the next play to give the Gators a 7-0 lead with 8:10 in the first quarter.

The Wildcats (2-2, 0-1) failed to pick up a single yard on their next possession, and Demps ran off tackle for 20 yards for the Gators' next touchdown, capping a four-play drive that took just 1:23.

Kentucky picked up a first down on its next drive ? its first of the game ? but Matt Elam picked off a pass by Morgan Newton at the Kentucky 46 and returned it 17 yards to the Florida 28. Rainey ran most of the rest of the way, with Trey Burton polishing it off with a 1-yard TD run to put the Gators up 21-0 with 3:39 still left in the first quarter.

Florida now has outscored the Wildcats 94-3 in the first quarters of the past four meetings.

"Once we had a couple of turnovers, it deflated us a little bit," Kentucky center Matt Smith said. "It's hard to get going again once they got the momentum, especially with a team like that as good as they are and as fast as they are."

Kentucky gave the ball away again in the second quarter, deep in its own territory. Jonathan Bostic hit Newton as his arm was behind his head, Newton dropped the ball and Florida's Jaye Howard grabbed it, running 2 yards for a touchdown to make it 28-3 with 11:30 left in the half.

The Wildcats scored their lone TD by making the Gators pay for a mistake of their own. Brantley headed to the locker room a few minutes before halftime after getting drilled by Danny Trevathan, the SEC's leading tackler. On his second play, backup quarterback Jeff Driskel fumbled the ball as Trevathan hit him, and Trevathan fell on the ball at the Florida 26.

Demps, who won a national title in the 60-meter dash at the 2010 indoor NCAA championships, showed the speed the Gators have become known for as he raced by defenders with an 84-yard touchdown run. It was Florida's longest since Emmitt Smith's 96-yard touchdown run against Mississippi State in 1988.

"He looked like he was about to get caught," Muschamp said, "so he was about to get a lot of grief when he got to the sideline if he had got caught."

'All My Children' ends its run with a cliffhanger (AP)

NEW YORK ? Tissues were on hand but there were few tears among two dozen soap opera fans gathered to watch "All My Children" sign off from ABC on Friday after more than 40 years.

That's because the screen faded to black with a gunshot and a cliffhanger ? an indication that the story may not be dead, even if the television series is. ABC has licensed the story to a production company that is hoping to keep the "All My Children" going online after the first of next year.

Carolyn Hinsey, author of "Afternoon Delight: Why Soaps Still Matter," organized a watching party at a Manhattan sports bar as a message to television executives who apparently think soap operas don't matter anymore.

Two of ABC's three daytime dramas, "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," were canceled this year. That leaves only four soaps on network television, with "General Hospital" the only one on ABC when "One Life to Live" formally leaves in a few months.

TV executives consider soaps a losing cause, more expensive to produce than talk or reality shows and with a dwindling audience as more women work and their tastes change ? even though the ratings for ABC's two canceled programs have jumped in recent months.

"The soap fans are still there," said Marie White, who drove in from Baltimore for the party. "It's just that Nielsen doesn't count them."

Nielsen, the television ratings company, doesn't count White. She keeps up with her favorites online these days.

Partygoers booed loudly when ABC ran a commercial for "The Chew," the cooking show that will replace "All My Children" next week. They saved their loudest cheer for when Erica Kane, the soap's most memorable character, portrayed by Susan Lucci, learned she would not get married again ? at least not yet.

She saved her final words on television for a promise to keep pursuing her beau even after he told her to have a nice life ? without him.

The soap has been tying up loose ends for much of its final week. But the prospect that it could continue led to some last-minute script changes, Hinsey said.

The final episode ended with most of the show's characters gathered at the Chandler house in fictional Pine Valley, Pa., for a party ? celebrating engagements, a pregnancy and some miracle medical revivals. Yet the character J.R., riled because he lost his business and fortune and because his wife left to raise their baby son with a lesbian, lurked outside with a gun.

The series ended as he fired. Left unseen was who, if anyone, J.R. shot ? homage, perhaps, to the famous 1980 "Dallas" cliffhanger that became known as "Who Shot J.R.?"

That may depend on business off the television screen, Hinsey said. Actors who decide not to continue with the series online may, in retrospect, wind up being victims of the gunman, she said.

Prospect Park this week announced the first deals with show cast members to continue with the online production. Cameron Mathison, who plays Ryan Lavery, and Lindsay Hartley, who portrays Dr. Cara Castillo Martin, have agreed to continue.

Lucci's participation is still up in the air.

Asked by Hinsey, a handful of people at the Manhattan party said they rated the final episode an 8 on a scale of one to 10. Many said they had heard rumors that the ending was going to be much bloodier.

"I think it's better than the whole town getting shot up," said Christine Levitin-Breyette, a Manhattan woman at the party. "That wasn't so bad."

Some of the final episode's dialogue felt more like actors talking to viewers, or television executives, than as part of the story. One example was when actress Debbi Morgan spoke soon after her blind character, Angie Hubbard, had her sight restored.

"One day our family and friends will be gone and they won't be back," she said. "They'll be gone for good. What if that day were today?"

Aquaponic Farm Thrives in Converted Industrial Space

In 2008, Josh Fraundor and Jim Godsil co-founded Sweet Water Organics, a for-profit organic fish and vegetable farm built inside a former crane manufacturing building. Located in the Bay View area of Milwaukee, this urban agriculture business uses a sustainable aquaponics system to raise approximately 35,000 Perch and 20,000 Tilapia, and produce a variety of leafy greens. Along with its aquaponics system, Sweet Water has integrated an outdoor greenhouse operation to provide additional organic produce to the local market.?

Sweet Water Aquaponics

The term aquaponics is a blended derivation of the terms aquaculture and hydroponic. In aquaponics systems, the growing of fish is tied intrinsically to the growth of plants.

Sweet Water?s aquaponic system was inspired by the three-tiered, bio-intensive, simulated wetland?developed by Growing Power?founder,?Will Allen.

At the Sweet Water Organics facility, in-ground fish tanks hold the perch and tilapia. With the use of a pump system, the water from the tanks is constantly recirculated from fish tank to plant beds, back to fish tank.

First the fish waste solids from the tank are separated out through a sponge-like bio-organic filter, then the waste water flows beneath the plant beds and is filtered by the the roots of the vegetables. The waste water acts as a natural fertilizer to the plants. The filtered water is recirculated back into fish tanks. The farm uses a raft system so that the edible portion of the plants does not come into contact with the waste water. The seeds are planted in compostable biodegradable plugs, which are placed into a raft that floats on top of the beds.

?One of the major rewards, when you figure out how to do it right, is how much less water you?re using to actually grow produce. It?s a contained system, so you can grow crops using 95% less water than traditional agriculture,? explains Sales Manager, Todd Leech.

Sweet Water Organics Aquaponic System

Products and Marketing

Sweet Water Organics? products runs the gamut from lettuce, basil, watercress, tomatoes and peppers to chard, spinach, wheatgrass, sprouts, and, of course, tilapia and perch.

The majority of the company?s revenue comes from wholesale distribution to independent local restaurants, co-ops and grocery stores. Sweet Water also sells its produce and fish through its own retail store and directly at farmers? markets.

The company is doing well and Leech says that demand for Sweet Water Organics products currently exceeds the company?s production capacity.

Growth and Experimentation

Sweet Water has it?s eye on creating spaces specifically designed for aquaponics systems; that is, new buildings built from the ground up that will not require the troubleshooting necessary to convert existing industrial space that was not intended for agricultural usage.

In the future, the company will be experimenting with live bio-filtration systems, which would allow it to farm prawns and mussels. The prawns and mussels would in turn not only live off the waste that the fish in the system produce, but also help to filter the water and provide another source of protein to market and sell to the Milwaukee community.

Sweet Water Organics is also working on developing a clean compost product for the city of Milwaukee.?The company currently partners with business throughout the city to collect thousands of pounds of compostable waste for processing such as sawdust, wood chips, post-consumer residual coffee grounds, and produce.

The Future

Sweet Water Organics hopes to create other businesses in this country and around the world to establish and drive the development of sustainable agricultural practices that will allow urban agriculture to flourish regardless of environmental barriers such as water crises or toxic soil.

?The largest hurdle for industrial agriculture is poisoned land,? remarks Leech.??If we can?t revitalize the land, we?ve got to be able to work on top of or around the land.?

But discrimination per se ? even discrimination based on normally-irrelevant characteristics like race or disability ? is not always bad. For a recent controversy over reverse discrimination (or rather over a failure to engage in such discrimination) see this recent case from Halifax, Nova Scotia. By Clare Mellor, for the Chronicle Herald: Africville trust hiring prompts some anger: Choosing white minister ?insulting?

Some members of Nova Scotia?s black community say they are outraged that a white person has been hired as executive director of the Africville Heritage Trust and are calling for her resignation.

?I find it insulting to all black people,? said Burnley (Rocky) Jones, a local lawyer and well-known human rights activist.

?Surely we, within our community, have many people fully qualified to do such a job.?

The trust was set up to establish a memorial to Africville, a major African-Nova Scotian community destroyed on the orders of Halifax officials in the 1960s.

The trust?s board of directors, which includes six representatives of the Africville community, recently hired Carole Nixon, a white Anglican minister, for the position?.

So-called ?reverse discrimination? is challenging, ethically. Preferential hiring of individuals from historically-disadvantaged groups can be a ham-fisted way to right past wrongs. But in at least some cases ? particularly cases involving high-profile positions ? the symbolic significance of the job in question has to at least be considered. (A very similar controversy arose a couple of years ago, when the Canadian National Institute for the Blind hired its first non-blind CEO.)

The first thing to note about the Halifax / Africville case is that it?s not primarily a black-vs-white dispute. It?s clear that those who oppose the hire don?t speak for Halifax?s entire black community. The Board of Directors of the Africville Trust is the body that did the hiring, and although detailed information about the composition of the Board is hard to find, the article cited above does say that the Board ?includes six representatives of the Africville [i.e., black] community.? That doesn?t change the fundamental ethical questions at stake, but it does sweep away any thought that this is just an us-vs-them debate.

It?s also worth pointing out a legal worry, here. Hiring based on race is generally wrong, and typically illegal. It?s not clear to me (a non-lawyer) that excluding non-blacks from consideration for a job like this would even be legal. Do the critics of this hire simply think that the job posting should have said ?Whites Need Not Apply?? Likely not. But a subtler position is logically open to them, anyway, namely a position that says something like ?if in doubt, give the job to the black candidate? (based perhaps on a presumption of greater personal understanding of the issues at stake). But again, I don?t know whether that would be legal. (Does anyone reading this know?) And surely no on really wants to settle, as one activist quoted in the story suggests, for a candidate who is merely ?fully qualified?. After all, there might well be a number of ?fully qualified? candidates, and so you?re still going to need to make a decision. And if the job is important, then we likely want it filled not just by someone qualified, but by the most qualified person.

But on the other hand, critics of this decision do have a point, and that has to do with the symbolic value that would attach to putting a black person in charge of the Africville Trust. It?s not hard to see that selecting a black man or woman for this kind of leadership role would send a certain kind of message, and maybe give black kids in Halifax another positive role-model, one more non-white individual occupying a position of prestige and influence.

All in all, I?m not sure what to think about this one. But one thing I?m pretty sure of is this: if you think a case like this has a clear and simple answer, you?re probably not thinking about it hard enough.
