Why do colossal squids have such colossal eyeballs? (+video)

The colossal squid is thought to have the largest eyes of any animal. A new study suggests that the squids eyes evolved to help them avoid sperm whales.?

The enormous eyes of giant and colossal squid may help them spot predatory sperm whales in their dim undersea habitat, a new study finds.

Skip to next paragraph Marine biologists in New Zealand studying the carcass of a colossal squid say they've measured its intact eye at eleven inches across, making it the largest animal eye on earth.

These mysterious squid are tough to spot and even tougher to study in their natural habitat. But squid that have been caught or observed have huge, basketball-size peepers ? three times the diameter of another other animal, including?behemoths of similar size, such as swordfish.

"It doesn't make sense a giant squid and swordfish are similar in size, but the squid's eyes are proportionally much larger, three times the diameter and 27 times the volume," study researcher S?nke Johnsen, a biologist at Duke University, said in a statement. "The question is why. Why do giant squid need such large eyes?"

Where'd you get those peepers?

To find out, Johnsen and her colleagues first had to confirm the eye size of these elusive creatures, because most eye size reports were based on anecdotes. They obtained photographs of the eye of a freshly caught giant squid and were able examine the corpse of a colossal squid, an even larger species, from New Zealand. [Gallery: Stunning Squid]

The examinations confirmed the squid eyes can get up to 10.6 inches (27 centimeters) in diameter. The pupils in these dinner-plate-size orbs are 3.5 inches (9 cm) across.

With this information, the researchers were able to mathematically model how well the squid is able to see in their deep-ocean habitat. They found that such giant eyes are usually a waste. At a size bigger than an orange, eyes take more energy to grow and maintain than they return in vision benefits, study researcher Dan-Eric Nilsson of Lund University said in a statement. But giant eyes do allow more light in, enabling an animal to detect lower levels of contrast in their dim environment.

Dangerous glow

This ability wouldn't matter much to a fish, but giant and?colossal squid?are in a unique situation, Nilsson, Johnsen and their colleagues report today (March 15) in the journal Current Biology. Their major predator is the?enormous sperm whale. The whales are huge, but at a distance in the dim ocean light, the only hint that one might be coming is the bioluminescence given off by ocean plankton dispersing as a whale swims through and disturbs them. It's this bioluminescence that might be the key to squids' giant eyes.

"It's the predation by large, toothed whales that has driven the evolution of gigantism in the eyes of these squid," Johnsen said.

With eyes the size of basketballs, the squid can detect the faint light of a moving sperm whale from a distance of about 294 feet (120 meters), the length of an American football field including end zones. That may be enough time to plan an escape, the researchers said.

The study is speculative, as interactions between sperm whales and giant squid aren't easy to observe. In fact, researchers had never even seen a live giant squid in action until 2005, when Japanese scientists managed to?capture one on video. But the researchers say their new model is a step forward in understanding how undersea creatures see.

"It is a powerful tool for understanding vision," Nilsson said.

10 clicks: Clooney, Hamm and a mutant bunny

Win Mcnamee / Getty Images

Actor George Clooney is arrested during a demonstration outside the Embassy of Sudan in Washington on Friday.

By Kurt Schlosser

George Clooney provided a little boost to the news cycle at the end of the week when he was arrested outside of the Sudanese embassy during a protest in Washington.

Let's recap the week that was in entertainment news with 10 clicks.

1. George Clooney spent most of the week talking to everyone who would listen about the humanitarian crisis he has witnessed firsthand in Sudan. The actor/activist even came under rocket fire while he was there, as he told Ann Curry on TODAY on Wednesday. The run of publicity hit its peak on Friday when Clooney and a group of others, including his father Nick, were handcuffed and arrested in front of the Sudanese embassy. They were quickly released.

2. Speaking of dashing leading men sticking their neck out for the common good, "Mad Men" star Jon Hamm made news this week when he basically said Kim Kardashian is an "idiot" and the culture that celebrates her success doesn't make any sense. Kim K. took the high road in a Twitter response later in the week and Hamm said he didn't mean anything personal by any of it.

3. Your real culture click of the week goes to the art researchers and scientists who have uncovered evidence that a fresco by Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci lost for five centuries may still exist behind a wall of Florence's city hall. The project is not without controversy, as holes are being drilled through an existing work of art to look for the da Vinci.

4. The drama ramped up on "American Idol" this week when it was revealed that contestant Jermaine Jones had concealed "multiple crimes"?and was therefore disqualified.?"Awww I will no longer b on the show," the singer tweeted. He later said he was "shocked" to be off the show.

5. Another reality show dealing with a little dramawas "The Bachelor," as Ben Flajnik had to explain that's he hasn't been hooking up with anyone else since proposing to Courtney Robertson. "Yes, we're together ... I think," Courtney sniffled on the "After the Final Rose" special.

6. The gossip heated up around Whitney Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown and whether she was dating?Nick Gordon, a man who many say was like a?son to Houston.?Although he was not legally adopted, sources say Gordon, 22,?began living with Houston and her family a decade ago due to family problems of his own.

7. "Luck" ran out for the HBO horse-racing drama this week. The new series starring?Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte was cancelled after a third horse died on the set.?"While we maintained the highest safety standards possible, accidents unfortunately happen and it is impossible to guarantee they won?t in the future," the show said in a release.

8. An animal of much smaller stature suffered an unfortunate end of its own this week in Germany. An earless bunny named Til was crushed to death under the foot of a camerman who had come to film the animal for a zoo news conference. The mutant rabbit "didn't suffer," said the zoo's director. "It was a direct hit."

9. Who knew that truth was out there? That was the lead this week on the story that former "X-Files" star Gillian Anderson has had numerous relationships with women. "You know, I'm old enough that I can talk about that," she told Out magazine. The twice-divorced Agent Scully has three children.

10. Actor Robert De Niro has been celebrated for his ability to get so deep into character for various roles. Apparently that was the case with "Being Flynn" in which the actor plays?a man past his prime, disconnected from his family and living on the streets. De Niro told TODAY that during a break from filming, while still in costume,?security at his hotel denied him entry.

Stocks mixed; Dow erases last week's huge loss

The Dow rose 37 points to close at 12959 Monday,?erasing a nerve-wracking 204-point loss it suffered a week ago.?

U.S. stocks struggled for direction Monday, unsure of what to make of news about Greece's debt workout and eclectic announcements from a few well-known U.S. companies, such as mattress maker Sealy and luxury retailer Michael Kors.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 ended the day higher, but the Nasdaq fell. Both indexes wavered between small gains and losses for big chunks of the day.

The Dow was the most stable, staying above Friday's close for all but a few minutes. The Dow closed up 37.69 points at 12,959.71. That marked four straight days of gains, only the second time that has happened so far this year.

The Dow has now erased a nerve-wracking 204-point loss it suffered last Tuesday, when investors sent stocks lower over concerns about Greece. The Dow's trading range of 56.38 points was its narrowest in more than 11 months.

The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged at day's end, up 0.22 points to 1,371.09. The Nasdaq fell 4.68 points to 2,983.66.

"The market is going to continue to feel very schizophrenic," said Carol Pepper, CEO and founder of Pepper International, a money management firm in New York. "Some days it's depressed, some days it's excited, some days it's terrified."

The 10 industry groups in the S&P 500 were evenly split between gainers and losers. Utilities, which tend to attract nervous investors because of their relative stability and generous dividends, rose the most. Markets in Europe were also divided. Germany did better than others, rising 0.3 percent. Greece fell 2.5 percent.

The news out of Europe seemed only to make predictions on where the market is heading more foggy. Greece persuaded private investors to agree to big losses on their bond holdings, which should help the country stave off default later this month. But the country is still in a severe recession.

Jeff Sica, president and chief investment officer of SICA Wealth Management in Morristown, N.J., said Greece is only a distraction from other deep-rooted problems throughout Europe, including brewing debt burdens in Portugal and Italy. Presidential elections in France add another layer of uncertainty because a new leader could backpedal on fiscal commitments made by President Nicolas Sarkozy.

The struggling European countries also can't cut spending, which they'll likely need to do to avoid bankruptcy, without angering their citizens. On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people in Spain took to the streets in dozens of cities to protest cuts in government spending.

Greece has "become a touchstone for people to say, 'Okay, things are getting better,'" Sica said. "But they had to force private investors to take losses, the European Central Bank has swelled their balance sheet, it's going to be impossible to impose austerity on these countries. They haven't really accomplished a single thing except buying time."

News about the U.S. economy has also been opaque, with every sign of economic recovery met with another sign of economic slowdown. While the unemployment rate falls, some analysts raise questions about the quality of the new jobs being created, and others worry that the high price of gas will prevent people from spending on non-necessities, which is crucial to an economic recovery. The average price for a gallon of gasoline jumped a nickel over the weekend to $3.80. China, the superpower that has pushed the world economy forward even as other countries flagged since 2008, announced that its growth slowed at the end of last year.

The market's knee-jerk nature has been highlighted in the past two weeks. The Dow generated positive buzz when it closed over 13,000 on Feb. 28, a milestone it hadn't reached since May 2008. But it's failed to close above that line again, and Tuesday's 204-point decline added to the uncertainty.

"Everybody is stepping back and assessing whether the ride is over," Sica said. "It's almost as if investors get to a point where they scratch their head and say, 'Does the market deserve to be here?'"

Several companies made big moves:

? Defibrillator maker Zoll Medical Corp. jumped 24 percent to $92.94 after its board agreed to a buyout offer of $93 per share from Japan's Asahi Kasei Corp.

? Mattress maker Sealy Corp. climbed 6 percent after its second-largest shareholder, an investment firm called H Partners Management, asked the company to shuffle its board and blamed the company's problems on the largest shareholder, private equity firm KKR & Co.

?Harley-Davidson Inc. climbed nearly 3 percent after Citigroup analyst Greg Badishkanian raised his price target to $50 from $46, saying he expects higher sales in the first quarter.

?Luxury retailer Michael Kors fell 2 percent after the company, purveyor of $950 high heels, announced late Friday that some of its major shareholders would sell their shares earlier than expected.
