Dreaming of a Family Home

When we moved to our little rural property we already had 18 month old twins and were planning on having more children, so we knew that we?d have to do a major renovation one day.? Right then and there we started planning and dreaming and talking about how we?d turn our little two bedroom house into the perfect space for our family.

Now, finally, all our dreaming and planning is turning into reality as we begin the long process of construction.

During the planning process, and now during the building, responses to our vision have not always been positive. Some people think we are downright nuts, but we are pretty sure we?re getting it right?for us. These are our dreams for our family home?

Our family home will have spaces that are adult oriented but also welcoming to children when needed.

I?m dreaming of a chaise lounge or single sofa bed next to our bed so that a sick or scared child can sleep close by without hassles.

Our family home will have spaces that allow us to work and play side by side and that encourage us to spend time together.

We?ve planned a big kitchen bench over looking an even bigger dining table so that there is room for dinner to be made while homework is done or artwork created.

We?ve planned a study that adjoins the living space so that both adults and children have a space to work and study but are not shut away from the rest of the family while doing so.

We?ve planned bedrooms for our children to share, but they will also have their own private spaces within them.

I?m dreaming of a study desk with space for the preschooler to create art on paper next to me as I am creating art on the screen.

Our family home will have spaces that are set up for success, that encourage more do?s and less don?ts.

I?m dreaming of lots of storage so breakables and non-kid items can be put out of sight as well as out of reach.

I?m dreaming of living room storage that can hide the television away when we don?t want to use it.

We?ve planned living areas that adjoin each other and overlook the outdoor space so that supervision is easy and adults can be there to support kids when needed.

We?ve planned a large covered veranda so that there is always a space to be outside, no matter what the weather.

Our family home will have spaces that make daily tasks easier for everyone.

I?m dreaming of storage that makes it easy for everyone to put things away.

We?ve planned for a laundry chute directly from the bathroom to the laundry to make doing the right thing easy.

Our new spaces won?t be perfect, there will be changes to make and new ideas to implement, and they will grow and evolve as we grow and evolve, but our dream is a home where we can all share the space as we live and work together, now and as we all grow up.

Sometimes living in a house without a proper kitchen or laundry with four small children, while my husband and various friends and family do the majority of the building work seems just a little insane.? Okay, it is totally insane! But once it?s done and we have a fabulous space for our family,? it will be worth every crazy dream, plan and? moment.

Games People Play? the bells that call our children home | ZipLine ...

I?ve come to regard the games we play as the bells that call our adult children home for the holidays including this past 4^th of July. Last weekend our family gathered with cousins, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers to celebrate one another and our independence ? both national and personal. As our children branch out and find their places in the world it?s important that they?feel securely rooted in family and tradition. Next to breaking bread, it seems that games have become our favorite pastime. As parents we need to set the stage for healthy activities the same way we set the table for daily nutrition.

This past weekend, squeals of delight could be heard morning, noon and night from?ongoing tournaments in Croquet, Ping Pong, Badminton, Beach Paddle and our newly acquired Bananagrams (a no-board version of scrabble). Kids in their twenties who might otherwise?focus on?beer and cocktails sought out new games and more space to record running scores and records.?Someone even suggested that?we paint our garage pillars ?chalk board? to keep the scores and memories recorded.

I fell asleep in the hammock one afternoon while pondering which was more satisfying to hear??bird sounds or game sounds. The game sounds prevailed because for me they represented both joy and connection. Games seem to bridge the gap between the generations and create common ground for a varied group.

I consider the warm associations?we have with the games we play, along?with the food we eat,?as the?crumbs that?lead our?family home. My hope and prayer is that a family that plays together, stays together.

DMX's Jail Time Extended Over Alleged Drug Violation

Rapper will remain in Arizona state prison for at least another week.

It sounds like rapper DMX will have to wait at least another week to get his latest attempt at a career reboot off the ground. According to TMZ, the MC (born Earl Simmons) was ordered to stay in prison for another week after authorities allegedly caught him with drugs.

X, 40, has been housed at a state prison in Yuma, Arizona, since January, and according to the gossip site, he has broken a number of rules over the past month, including drug possession, failing or refusing a drug test, smoking in an unauthorized area, acting disrespectfully to the staff and engaging in disorderly or disruptive conduct. Of the seven alleged disciplinary infractions since January, four have come since June 12, with two more in April for alleged drug possession and disorderly conduct, and another in January for unauthorized smoking.

Due to his latest infractions, the troubled rapper — who had been slated to be released Wednesday — will spend at least another week in prison, according to the Associated Press. His new release date is July 19. He was sent back to prison in December for a probation violation after an arrest in November for failing to check in with his probation officer.

Around December 20, X was reportedly transferred to a mental-health unit after the judge in his case described him as having an "undiagnosed mental condition," before ordering him back to prison for one year.

X's lawyer, Gary Jenkins, told MTV News that he is still looking into the alleged violations, but that the rapper's reported refusal to take a mandatory drug test did result in a seven-day hold that will delay his release until July 19. Jenkins said he did not yet have information about the alleged drug possession, but that he is hopeful his client will get the help he needs to work on his drug addiction issues when he is released. "I hope that this time he understands that his addiction can't be dealt with privately," Jenkins added.

The rapper's manager, Nakia Walker, said that after years of battling with the authorities and getting caught in a revolving door between his home and jail in the state, she senses that X wants to leave Arizona and get a fresh start. "Prison was never a place for Earl because he has a sickness," she said. "If he is medicated properly, he wouldn't have the need for drugs." Current plans call for X to drop his new single, "Y'all Don't Know," featuring Busta Rhymes, within the next two to three weeks.

Murdoch heads to Britain as News of the World closes (AFP)

LONDON (AFP) ? Rupert Murdoch was heading to London to take charge of dealing with a phone-hacking scandal that has felled his News of the World tabloid, as journalists Saturday prepared the paper's final edition.

The News Corp. chief was due to arrive in Britain on Sunday, a company source said, as the sensationalist tabloid that has been in circulation for 168 years hits news stands for the last time.

Murdoch has been keen to limit the fallout from the crisis which has cast a shadow over his bid to take full control of satellite broadcaster BSkyB, on which the government is due to decide soon.

The opposition Labour party meanwhile ratcheted up pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron, a day after one of his former aides was arrested over the scandal, demanding the establishment of an inquiry be speeded up.

Murdoch's arrival comes as about 200 staff at the News of the World face an uncertain future as the paper closes its doors.

News of the World journalists said emotions were running high as the paper prepared to go to print for the last time. Editor Colin Myler said it was a "very difficult day for us all", in a personal e-mail to staff.

"It's not where we want to be and it's not where we deserve to be," he wrote. "But I know we will produce a paper to be proud of."

Chief sub editor Alan Edwards added: "We are like a family up there and there's very much that feel that we're all pulling together."

Murdoch took the decision on Thursday to close the publication, Britain's biggest-selling Sunday paper which is part of his British newspaper business News International, following days of fresh phone-hacking allegations.

Claims that the News of the World hacked the voicemails of a murdered girl and the families of dead soldiers rapidly deepened a crisis that has been dogging the paper for several years.

Despite the anger, Britons are expected to the snap up the final copy of the paper as a souvenir and a News International source said the print run had been substantially increased.

The paper normally sells some 2.6 million copies a week.

Political pressure meanwhile mounted on Cameron on Saturday, a day after his ex-media chief Andy Coulson was arrested on suspicion of involvement in phone hacking during his time as editor of the paper.

The Labour party demanded that the government take steps to speed up the establishment of a judge-led inquiry into the scandal following a report that a News International executive destroyed vital evidence.

The Conservative prime minister has announced a judge-led public inquiry into the furore, as well as a second inquiry into the way in which the British press is regulated.

"In view of the fact that the News of the World is shutting down, it is a matter of great urgency that any documentary evidence, including files and emails, is preserved to enable a proper inquiry into these serious allegations to take place," said the Labour party 's culture spokesman Ivan Lewis.

"It is essential that we engage in immediate discussions so that by the end of the day we are in a position to agree the appointment of the judge."

The call came after the Guardian newspaper reported that police were investigating whether an executive deleted "millions of emails" from an internal archive. A News International spokeswoman said: "This assertion is rubbish."

Cameron's Downing Street office however insisted it was acting "as rapidly as possible and legally permissible", in a statement.

Coulson, who was released on bail Friday until October after his arrest on suspicion of involvement in phone hacking and corruption, quit as Cameron's communications director in January as the hacking scandal grew.

This followed his resignation from the top job at The News of the World in 2007 after a journalist and a private investigator working for the paper were jailed over phone hacking.

As editor, Coulson said he took ultimate responsibility for the hacking but always denied any knowledge that it took place on his watch.

On Friday, police also arrested Clive Goodman, the News of the World's former royal editor and one of two men jailed in 2007 for hacking the voicemails of Princes William and Harry.

He was detained on allegations of corruption and later bailed until October.

A third man, aged 63, was arrested on suspicion of corruption late Friday and was later released on bail until October.
