Fierce storm surprises Wis. campers, child killed (AP)

GRANTSBURG, Wis. ? A fierce thunderstorm swept through a rural Wisconsin county that was packed with holiday campers, toppling trees that killed an 11-year-old girl, blowing boats ashore and injuring more than three dozen people, officials said Saturday.

The storm moved across Minnesota and Wisconsin on Friday, packing winds approaching 80 mph and hail as large as softballs.

In northwestern Wisconsin's Burnett County, at least 39 people went to hospitals after the storm toppled hundreds of trees and left several thousand utility customers without power. Authorities said most of the injured were treated and released, but three were in critical condition Saturday evening.

Heavy winds upended boats in the area and blew them ashore, while an airport hangar in neighboring Douglas County collapsed onto a single-engine plane. Searches were conducted

The storm came at one of the worst times of the year for rural Burnett County: a summer holiday weekend, when the area's lakes and rivers attract tens of thousands of visitors, said Rhonda Reynolds, a regional director for Wisconsin Emergency Management.

The county population is 17,000 she said, but the long weekend drew an estimated 80,000 visitors to the county about 90 miles northeast of Minneapolis.

"The weekend holiday traffic is complicating things just because of the number of people," she said. "Emergency crews are trying to get access to various areas but with trees blocking roads, and with all the people, movement is restricted."

A news release from Burnett County Emergency Management said the 11-year-old girl from Hinckley, Minn. was killed when lightning struck a tree and knocked it over onto her. Her name was not released.

Utilities scrambled to restore power to tens of thousands of customers. Xcel Energy said nearly 100,000 customers from eastern South Dakota to western Wisconsin lost power at some point, but crews restored power to about 85,000 customers by Saturday evening. The utility said crews would work around the clock until it was back to normal service levels.

The storm moved into southwest Minnesota on Friday afternoon and took nearly six hours to pass through before slipping into northwest Wisconsin, said Matt Friedlein, a National Weather Service meteorologist. The bad weather had moved out by Saturday morning, when skies were clear and sunny with temperatures in the 80s.

Anita Frase, the owner of Bay Park Resort & Campground in Trego, said she and the resort's 300 visitors knew a storm would be coming but they didn't expect it to hit so swiftly and with such intensity.

"About 9 o'clock the winds picked up and within five minutes it was upon us. Those were probably the darkest skies I've ever seen up here," she said, adding that the storm knocked down several trees, with some landing on vehicles. "A lot of people were very nervous. Some of the kids were crying."

Workers were also rattled at a Grantsburg store near the St. Croix River that rents canoes, kayaks and boating gear. Store clerk Aimee Van Tatenhove said the wind was so strong and loud that no one realized a medium-sized tree had fallen into the roof until employees went outside.

There were early reports of missing boaters on the St. Croix River, prompting an urgent search. Burnett County Emergency Management said all canoeists were accounted for by Saturday evening.

In Minnesota, a driver suffered minor cuts when hail the size of a baseball hit a vehicle's windshield, said Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin. Roofs were torn away in several towns.

"Some communities had multiple passes at this storm ? including golf ball-, baseball- and softball-sized hail," said McLeod County Emergency Management Director Kevin Mathews, who said two tractor-trailers were blown off local highways.

Two Minnesota state parks sustained tree damage so heavy that a conservation officer who was making sure no campers were in the area had to abandon his vehicle and hike back out on foot, said Chris Niskanen of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

He urged people to stay out of Camden State Park and St. Croix State Park, which are technically closed because of the state's government shutdown but could still attract campers because they're public land. He cautioned that some trees may have uprooted but gotten hung up tenuously on other trees.

"It's an issue of health and safety," he said. "Since those parks are closed they don't have the personnel to go in and remove (the trees). People need to know there's a danger if they start wandering around."

Casey Anthony murder case goes to jury in Florida

The jury in the first-degree murder trial of Casey Anthony began deliberations on Monday afternoon as the trial entered its seventh week with no break for the Independence Day holiday.

The jury left the courtroom at 12:09 p.m. local time to start weighing the case after receiving instructions from Judge Belvin Perry .

Casey Anthony, 25, faces the death penalty if found guilty of first-degree murder in the June 16, 2008, death of her 2-year-old daughter Caylee. Anthony, who has been in jail for almost three years awaiting trial, chose not to testify in her own behalf.

Casey Anthony also is charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter of a child, and four counts of providing false information to a law enforcement officer.

Prosecutors say Casey smothered Caylee with duct tape, drove around for several days with Caylee's body in her car trunk and then dumped the remains in woods near the Anthony family home.

Casey initially told detectives that Caylee had been kidnapped by a nanny, triggering a nationwide search that ended on December 11, 2008. That's when Caylee's skeletal remains were found in woods near the Anthony family home with duct tape dangling from her skull.

Defense lawyer Jose Baez provided an alternate theory of Caylee's death, claiming that Caylee accidentally drowned in the Anthony's backyard swimming pool on June 16, 2008, and that, for some unspecified reason, her death was not reported.

The trial featured novel scientific evidence concerning the chemical signatures found in the odor of death.

Evidence during the six weeks of testimony showed that Casey lied to friends and family for a month about Caylee's whereabouts while Casey spent time hanging out with her boyfriend, dancing at nightclubs, shopping and getting tattoos.

Casey's mother Cindy testified that Casey rebuffed her attempts for four weeks to see or talk to Caylee by claiming that she and Caylee were in Tampa, Jacksonville and various other places.

Cindy finally called 911 and reported Caylee missing on July 15, 2008, after finding Casey's car abandoned at an impound lot smelling of what she and numerous witnesses testified they recognized as a dead body.

Prosecutors and the defense team each spent about 4 hours Sunday and Monday trying to persuade the jury to their viewpoint.

Prosecutor Linda Burdick told the jury Monday that Casey was "a pathological liar" who behaved more like a guilty person than a grieving mother after Caylee's death.

"What do guilty people do? They lie. They avoid. They run," Burdick said.

Prosecutor Jeff Ashton told the jury there is no innocent reason for anyone to ever put duct tape on a child's face. He ridiculed the defense suggestion that Caylee's death was an accident.

"People don't make accidents look like murder. That's absurd," Ashton said.

Burdick replayed for the jury a taped interview of Casey while the search for Caylee was under way in which the detectives told her they would understand if she was covering up an accidental death. Casey insisted in that interview that Caylee was alive.

Burdick also replayed for the jury a videotaped jailhouse visit during which Cindy told Casey that rumors were circulating that Caylee drowned.

"Miss Anthony was also given the opportunity to adopt that (story of a drowning death) and rejected it," Burdick said.

Baez, in his closing argument on Sunday, tried to point the finger at Casey's father George.

Baez had promised jurors in his opening statement at the beginning of the trial to provide evidence that George sexually molested Casey. Baez suggested the sexual abuse explained Casey's behavior after Caylee's death which even Baez acknowledged was "bizarre" and "inappropriate."

However, Judge Perry ruled on Sunday that no evidence of sexual abuse was presented and prohibited both sides from mentioning the issue in their closing arguments.

Baez still argued that the family was dysfunctional. Baez suggested to the jury that George covered up the alleged drowning death and that George helped detectives make a case against Casey.

Baez argued that the prosecution provided no direct evidence of how, where or when Caylee died. Baez suggested jurors were left with more questions than answers.

"There are no mysteries to solve here ... if you have questions, it was not proven," Baez said.
