Origin PC joins the 11-inch, rebadged gaming laptop party, outs the EON 11-S

Image

Last week may have drawn to a close, but the march of Clevo news continues. On the heels of Maingear announcing an 11-inch gaming notebook, Origin PC is throwing its own ultraportable into the ring: the EON 11-S. Though this is a new model for the company (the smallest laptop it's ever sold, in fact), it's not quite fresh to us: this is the same exact Clevo-made notebook Maingear unveiled two days ago, only re-badged under Origin PC's brand and available in a wider range of colors. As far as performance goes, then, that means you can expect Ivy Bridge processors, a 2GB NVIDIA GT 650M GPU, Optimus graphics-switching technology and a battery rated for 6.5 hours of runtime. In Origin PC's case, the laptop starts at $999 (compared with $1,099 for Maingear), though you'll have to head over to Origin's site for a breakdown of what specs you'll be getting at that lower price.

Waka Flocka Ready To 'Smash' Drake's Club Paradise Tour

'Why not put us all together? I salute him for that,' Flocka tells MTV News of Drizzy tapping new all-stars like French Montana and 2 Chainz.

Waka Flocka Flame is ready to hit the club.

On May 7, Waka, J. Cole, Meek Mill, 2 Chainz and French Montana will hit the road with Drake on the next leg of the Toronto rapper's ever-evolving Club Paradise tour.

"You know, the kings of the club gotta go to the club," Flocka told MTV News earlier this week at a Brooklyn, New York photo shoot. "They told me Club Paradise is the most popping-iest club in the United States right now."

The 27-city run will kick off in Concord, California, and move through amphitheatres in Las Vegas, Houston, Chicago and New York.

"I want to go out on tour with the most exciting artists right now, and I want to make sure that I have songs with all of them," Drizzy said during a conference call for the press on Tuesday. "If we start getting into it and we start really vibing, maybe the last few nights, it's a collaboration show; maybe we do all of our songs onstage together."

Right now, there are few rap artists more exciting than the energetic Waka Flocka, whose latest single, "Round of Applause," has become a strip-club staple. "He's like, 'We the new era, we the new faces of rap, we the new generation,' " the Atlanta riot-starter said of a conversation he and Drake had. "So why not put us all together? I salute him for that. You know I'm about to smash that."

Though he's the headliner, Drake doesn't look at his tourmates as opening acts. Instead, he'll treat Club Paradise as if it were an all-star music experience similar to the popular Coachella or Bamboozle festivals.

"On this tour, I encourage people to get there early, because it's more [of] a festival vibe, if anything," he said. "It's one of those days that's it's going to start during the sunlight and the sun's going to drop, it's outdoors, it's summertime ... I want people to make it a day."

Aside from Drake, who are you most excited to see on the next leg of the Club Paradise Tour? Tell us in the comments!

Demi Lovato Speaks on Illicit Drug Use: I Could Have Died

A couple weeks ago on Twitter, Demi Lovato bared her true face.

Now, in the pages of British magazine Fabulous, the singer is baring her soul.

Demi Lovato in Fabulous

In one of her more honest interviews to date, the 19-year old goes into detail about her pre-rehab drug use, telling the publication:

"I was depressed. I would come offstage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I'd come crashing down and would try to find a way to re-create that feeling, to stay 'up.'"

And you might be shocked to learn who fueled Demi's habit.

"Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs," she said. "They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass."

Lovato, of course, entered a treatment facility in November 2010 and has talked since about her emotional and physical issues, citing an eating disorder and bi-polarity. But this is the first time she's really discussed any kind of substance abuse.

"Being a celebrity can be dangerous. Nobody says 'no'. That's why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me."

Instead, thank God, Demi has bounced back and her career is going strong. She performed last month on American Idol.

Panels Are A Waste Of Time, But They Don?t Have To Be

trashtimeTwo years ago, when I first co-founded Earbits, I started frequenting various startup events like so many other first-time founders. Some of them were mixers, others were pitch competitions, and many were topic-focused panels and discussions meant to provide sage advice to budding entrepreneurs. I had reasonable experience on the ground floor of various startups but raising capital was a mystery to me. Naturally, I went to more than a few panel discussions about fundraising in preparation for doing that at my new company. Every panel I ever went to about fundraising was filled with prominent Angel investors and VC's telling us about how to put together a good deck, how to get their attention through a warm intro, what kinds of things make a company invest-able, and other very common fundraising advice. After having read all of the same advice on Both Sides of the Table and Venture Hacks, I found that most fundraising panels were a complete waste of time.

Tricky time for Netflix as loss expected

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Netflix Inc reports quarterly results on Monday at a precarious time. Its bill for streaming movies and TV shows has soared at a time when customer growth is slowing and the company projects an expansion abroad will push it into the red.

Wall Street expects Netflix to lose about 27 cents a share, but investors will zero in on how many new customers the video rental company added in the past three months.

That growth, which slowed in the fourth quarter compared with a year earlier, is crucial for Netflix to pay commitments it has made with Disney, Warner Bros, CBS and others to stream their movies to TV sets as it continues its shift from mailing DVDs to subscribers.

Its content bill ballooned as the company shelled out for past seasons of "Mad Men" and "The Office" TV shows as well as movies that include Oscar winner "The Artist" and the animated "Kung Fu Panda" franchise.

In 2011 alone, costs of licensing, acquiring and delivering content soared more than 55 percent to $1.8 billion, according to a Netflix regulatory filing. Total content liabilities on the balance sheet, which includes amounts payable to producers like studios, surged about eightfold to nearly $1.7 billion as of the end of 2011.

Netflix never fully recovered its credibility with investors after a price hike and other missteps sparked a wave of cancellations by angry customers last year. Once one of Wall Street's highest-flying stocks, its shares dropped from $304.79 in July to $62.37 in November. On Friday, shares closed at $106.11 on Nasdaq.

"The business model works if they continue to add subscribers," said Morningstar analyst Michael Corty, who believes Netflix shares are overvalued and are worth about $80 per share. "If that slows down, profitability becomes an issue."

At the end of last year, Netflix rebounded from the subscriber backlash to reach 24.4 million U.S. subscribers, just below the peak before it announced the price hike and quickly scrapped a plan to put its DVD business on a separate website called "Qwikster."

Healthy subscriber growth is key to what CEO Reed Hastings calls "the virtuous cycle."

"As we get more subscribers, we're able to get more content, which then helps us get more subscribers," Hastings told analysts on a January conference call. The company will buy more titles to improve the service "for a very long time," he said.

In a January letter to shareholders, Netflix said content spending would increase each quarter but not by as much as the year-over-year doubling projected for the first quarter.

Netflix expects to add up to 1.9 million U.S. streaming subscribers in the quarter, while losing as many as 1.8 million DVD customers. Internationally, it projects a gain of up to 1.2 million subscribers.

Barclays Capital analyst Anthony DiClemente downgraded Netflix shares earlier this month to "equal weight" with a $115 price target. In a note to clients, he warned that "content cost inflation could put a strain" on the company, just as rivals such as Amazon.com Inc and Comcast Corp's Streampix pose bigger threats.

"Content costs are going higher -- much higher -- as new bidders enter the market and drive up the value of digital content," DiClemente said in a note to clients.

AGGRESSIVE EXPANSION

Netflix's strategy of spending more on content to lure subscribers will also be put to the test in foreign markets, where the company has aggressively expanded to Canada, Latin American and Great Britain in the last two years.

Faced with piracy and other challenges in Latin America, where it opened in 43 markets including Mexico and Brazil, Hastings conceded last quarter it will likely take longer than his hoped-for two years to turn a profit there.

The company also expanded in January to Great Britain, where it faces tough competition from Amazon's Love Films and satellite operator BSkyB, which has locked up the streaming rights to many of the most popular films through exclusive contracts with major Hollywood studios. Britain's Competition Commission is set to rule by July on whether BSkyB is unfairly keeping competition out of the lucrative British markets.

Costs to build the streaming service abroad are expected to drive Netflix to a loss. The company projects a first-quarter loss of up to $27 million and losses for the calendar year.

Industry analysts forecast a loss of around $16 million, or 27 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Revenue is expected to rise 21 percent from a year earlier to $869.3 million.

The progress in signing up international customers will get a close look from Wall Street for signs of when Netflix might return to the black. International markets present "both an opportunity and a risk factor for (Netflix) shares in the near to medium term," said Stern Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who rates Netflix "neutral."

Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector

The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector ($450 street) is the brightest pico projector we?ve tested, with a good range of connections including HDMI. It stacks up well against other pico projectors in connectivity, and has decent image quality but for one notable issue we encountered in testing. It?s worth a good look if you?re looking for a powerful pocket projector.

The PK320 is rated at 100 lumens, and has a native WVGA (854 by 480 pixel) widescreen resolution. The projector is quite compact, measuring 1.2 by 4.7 by 2.7 inches. Using our postage scale, I weighted the projector at 0.5 pounds, while adding the power adapter brought the total weight up to just under a pound. The projector also can run off an included, removable lithium-ion cell that can last 90+ minutes in eco mode and 50+ minutes in standard mode, according to Optoma. It can fit in my pants pocket easily enough, though it takes up much of the room.

This copper-brown projector has the look of a larger projector, with the lens near the edge of one of the long sides, as opposed to the ?light saber? appearance of many picos in which the beam emerges from the middle of the narrow end. The focus wheel is in front of the lens, and is tricky to use, even if you can avoid putting a finger into the light path. On one side is the tiny power button; in back are the ports, a good selection for a pico projector: a proprietary port to fit a VGA cable; mini-HDMI; micro-USB for file transfer; AV-in, which fits an included cable with 3 RCA plugs for composite video, and an audio-out jack for headphones.

On top of the projector is a 7-button control panel, backlit with blue LEDs (though you have to quickly make a selection as the buttons soon go dark). The projector includes a tiny remote the same 7 buttons, plus buttons for Off, Bright, and for accessing VGA, HGMI, and Video sources. Working the menus can be awkward, especially at first. The controls (both on the remote and on the projector itself) make use of the arrow keys, but more often as symbol keys to access specific functions than to navigate menus. For instance, the Home screen shows six choices, each identified by a symbol: the right arrow denotes Setup, the up arrow, Music, etc.?they?re useless as arrow keys here in that you can?t scroll anywhere, but they do take you to the functions they symbolize. This takes some getting used to.

You can run presentations computer free from the projector?s 2GB of internal memory, or off of a microSD card. In addition to showing video, you can play music, show photos, or display business documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or PDF) from internal memory, memory card, or thumb drive.

I tested the PK320 from about 8 feet away from our test screen, where it threw a test image about 48 inches diagonally. Image quality suffered in modest ambient light, so it?s best used in a relatively small, dark room.

Image Quality

In testing using the DisplayMate ?suite, I found the PK320?s data image quality suitable for internal presentations, say to a small workgroup?provided that the room is dark and relatively small. You could use it for presenting to potential clients in a pinch, though you might not want to use it in presentations where sharp text or exacting color is paramount. The good news is that (with the exception of an issue that I?ll soon discuss) colors were bright and reasonably true, especially yellows, which often look dull or mustardy with DLP projectors. The projector also showed less of a rainbow effect? distracting red-green-blue rainbow glints, particularly in bright areas against a dark background?than most DLP projectors.

In our text testing, images showed some blur at the two smallest sizes in both black-on-white and white-on-black text, a bit more fuzzy than is typical of a data projector. The other notable issue involved tinting in images with white or gray backgrounds.

When I set up our test unit and turned it on, I immediately noticed a pink tint in the (rather busy) image?s upper left corner. It persisted even after I?d given the projector enough time to fully warm up. In DisplayMate testing, when viewing an image that should have been uniformly white, the tinting revealed itself more fully as pinkish on the image?s left side, and greenish towards the bottom center.

The issue was notable enough that I requested a second test unit from our Optoma rep. I noticed the same issue in the second projector, though it wasn?t as severe: Only a trace of the pink showed up (in the same location), but the green was still apparent, at nearly the same intensity as with the original test unit. It showed up against white to medium gray backgrounds in data images, and with Word and Excel documents. It?s hard to say how pervasive or severe the problem is among PK320s in general based on two test units, but it?s definitely an issue worth looking out for. Optoma says that it is looking into the issue, with an eye towards correcting any irregularities they encounter.

Video Quality

I tested video quality using multiple video sources over several connections, primarily HDMI. The Optoma ML300 is okay for short clips, provided that color fidelity isn?t critical. For the most part, colors were bright and well saturated, but some tinting was apparent at times. Flesh tones tended to look reddish, and some bright areas took on a greenish tinge. Also, there was some loss of detail in bright areas. One plus is that, as was the case in data images, rainbow artifacts were nearly nonexistent and shouldn?t be an issue except maybe for people particularly sensitive to the effect.

Other Issues

The audio from the PK320?s built-in 2-watt speaker is of modest volume, not bad for a pico projector but you?ll want to be close to the projector whether you?re watching a movie or playing music. Fortunately the unit has an audio-out jack for headphones or powered external speakers.

The LED light source will last an estimated 20,000 hours, so you should never have to replace bulbs. The projector is backed by a 1-year limited warranty.

The market for micro-projectors has changed in the past year, with the influx of small LED-based projectors, palmtop sized or a little larger, in the 200 to 500 lumen range. Though there were always a few palmtop projectors, there?s now more of a continuum in side and brightness between pico projectors and ultra-portable business projectors.

The PK320 is among the largest and most powerful pico projectors, and its price is just slightly lower than the new micro-projectors (which cluster in the $500 to $600 range). The PK320 is smaller and lighter than these models, which weigh between 2 and 3 pounds. One drawback, though, is that it has an external AC adapter?which, unlike the projector, isn?t pocketable?while the LED micro-projectors have internal power supplies. The micro-projectors offer higher resolution, generally WXGA (1,280 by 800), and they?re considerably brighter than picos? though we haven?t been impressed with TI?s latest generation of DLP chips that many of them use, as they tend to introduce apparent scaling artifacts in data images that may result in softer focus.

If you?re considering the Optoma Pico PK320, you may want to look at some of these slightly larger and brighter micro-projectors such as the Optoma ML500 ?($650 street, 3.5 stars), Acer K330 ($600 street, 3.5 stars), and the more entertainment-oriented BenQ Joybee GP2 ($599 direct, 4 stars) as well. As for picos, the Editors? Choice Optoma Pico PK301 offers much of what the PK320 brings to the table at a lower price, though it lacks an HDMI connection and is only rated at 50 lumens. The Favi B1-LED-Pico ($280 street, 3.5 stars) is also a respectable choice, though it lacks a battery and so must remain yoked to a wall wart.

The Optoma Pico PK320 Pocket Projector is a powerhouse as a pico projector, bright and with a wealth of connectivity choices. However, it?s less impressive for its price now that bright micro-projectors are available for a little more money, and it still has a few image quality kinks to work out.

Don't get us wrong, we think Mauricio Affonso's expanding table is a clever idea that's been beautifully executed. Top Ways To Deal With Personal Finance Issues

It is always a good idea to examine your recent credit report before you apply for a loan in order to avoid disappointment. You credit score may be compromised by outdated or inaccurate information. When you see a mistake, be sure to report it.

A way to save money would be to set up a withdrawal that?s automatic from your bank account, that goes into a savings account with high interest. This may be strange, but it?ll become routine after a couple months. You?ll see it like a bill, and you can watch the savings grow in no time.

Don?t take a lot of student loans out if you?re not expecting to be able to pay them off in the near future. If you have not yet chosen a major or mapped out your career path, private school tuition may not be your best bet.

Avoid paying utility bills late. You can hurt your credit rating if you pay them late. In addition, late fees will end up costing you an arm and a leg. Paying your bills in a timely manner will help you gain control over your finances.

Get a checking account that benefits you better. Most people stay with an account they have had for a long time, even if that bank is applying expensive fees. Review the current fee structure that applies to your account. Take the time to shop around and see if you can?t find an account that will let you hang onto more of your money.

If you can, put money into an IRA. This will go a long way to improving your future financial health. Anyone interested can open an individual retirement account with a bank, brokerage firm, or credit union. Contribute to this fund monthly and watch your retirement fund grow substantially.

Instead of paying your debts immediately, consider using that money to start an emergency fund. This is ideal if you have used your credit cards in the past to handle emergencies. When choosing how much money to save, keep in mind regular problems that might pop up and how much money they are going to require, like car repairs or medical matters.

Make decisions carefully. Wouldn?t you like to be saving at least 100 dollars every month? It may be painful, but try eliminating your daily latte or mocha in favor of homemade coffee from home. Takeout coffees can cost up to $5 each, whereas you can make a cup of home-brewed coffee for less than 20 cents. To make home-brewed coffee more tasty, try adding flavored creamer and some whipped toppings. Pour your home-brewed coffee into a polystyrene cup and take your coffee with you!

The most logical way to get rid of debt is to pay down the debt with the highest interest rate first. You may want to pay all debts equally, but those with a higher interest rate should be paid off first to avoid accruing more debt. Paying down credit card debt is particularly important because credit card interest rates are projected to increase in the next few years.

Buying a car is a crucial purchase that people make in their lives. The best thing that you can do to get the most reasonable price on an automobile is to shop around all of the dealers in your area. Don?t forget to look on the Internet.

Credit card debt should be erased as soon as possible. Even a minor amount of debt means that you?re paying creditors to carry over your debt each month. That?s a complete waste of money! If possible, pay off your entire credit card balance before the month is at an end.

If you?re looking to get on track with your personal finances then you have to pay bills early. Paying your bills early will help you keep track of expenses and keep your budget under control. It will also make it so that if you run into an unexpected expense, you will not have to worry about paying your next bill as soon.

With the advice that you have received today, you should be able to make things right once more. At this point, you should feel more confident in your ability to manage your money. If these tips have given you hope, show this article to a friend or someone else who can use it too!
