Stocks bounce back as House to reconvene

9 hrs.

Stocks staged a sharp recovery in the final hour of trading Thursday following news that the House of Representatives will reconvene on Sunday evening to resume talks, with less than a week left until the "fiscal cliff" deadline.

The House of Representatives will meet on Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m., according to GOP aides.?

"Moves are always exacerbated during low-volume days and we'll continue to react to every headline from Washington," said Keith Bliss, senior vice president at Cutton & Co. "But I still think the overall market is in a bullish sentiment by the way that the technical are lining up. It might be prudent to keep some powder dry and buy on these dips."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 18.28 points, or 0.14 percent, to end at 13,096.31, dragged by Cisco and Alcoa. The blue-chip index was down nearly 150 points at its session low.

The S&P 500 dipped 1.73 points, or 0.12 percent, to finish at 1,418.10. The Nasdaq erased 4.25 points, or 0.14 percent, to close at 2,985.91. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, turned lower after rising above 20 earlier for the first time in nearly five months.

Among key S&P sectors, materials and financials held small losses, while consumer staples turned higher.

Earlier, stocks tumbled more than 1 percent following Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's comment that a "fiscal cliff" deal may not be reached by the end of the year.

"It looks like that's where we're headed," Reid said of the looming fiscal cliff and pointed fingers at House Speaker John Boehner of running a "dictatorship" by "not allowing the vast majority of the House of Representatives to get what they want."

Obama cut short his Christmas vacation in Hawaii to deal with the deadlocked talks between Democrats and Republicans on what to do with $600 billion in tax increases and automatic spending cuts, due to kick in on Jan. 1. With less than a week remaining this year, time is now running out and the pressure on politicians to find a solution is building, as U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned the U.S. will hit the debt ceiling on Monday, Dec. 31.

The two sides could work towards a "mini-deal" to postpone the effects of the fiscal cliff by extending tax cuts for taxpayers with incomes below $250,000, postponing the automatic spending cuts, and extending unemployment benefits.?

Meanwhile on the economic front, the consumer confidence index tumbled to 65.1 in December from a downwardly revised 71.5 in November, hitting a four-month low, according to the Conference Board.

Earlier, jobless claims fell 12,000 to a seasonally adjusted 350,000 last week. Meanwhile, the four-week moving average tumbled to its lowest since March 2008.?

And new home sales rose 4.4 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted 377,000-unit annual rate, the fasts pace in 2-1/2 years, according to the Commerce Department.

Marvell Technology declined after a federal grand jury ruled the chipmaker infringed two patents held by Carnegie Mellon University and ordered the company to pay $1.17 billion in damages. In addition, at least two brokerages lowered their rating on the company.

Toyota Motor said it plans to settle a U.S. class-action lawsuit for $1.1 billion.

Domino's Pizza climbed after Oppenheimer raised its price target on the pizza chain to $50 from $44.

Hartford Financial Services edged higher after Stifel added the financial services company to its "select" list and raised its target price to $28 from $25.

BCD Semiconductor skyrocketed more than 90 percent after the chipmaker agreed to be bought by Diodes in a deal worth $151 million.?

In Europe, stocks rose in cautious trading after being closed for Christmas and Boxing Day. Meanwhile, in Asia, Japanese stocks hit a 21-month high as a weaker yen boosted export stocks. Sentiment in Asia was boosted as profits at China's factories jumped in November, helped by the recovery in the economy.

Sudan says to get loan from Chinese state oil firm

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan will get a large loan from Chinese state oil firm China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), the main oil operator in the Arab African country, state news agency SUNA reported.

Finance Minister Ali Mahmoud gave no details but said the loan would help stabilise the economy, which has been hit hard by the loss of most oil reserves to South Sudan, and the foreign exchange rate of the Sudanese pound, SUNA said on its website.

The loan would "lead to a radical change in the structure of the Sudanese economy," he said.

The finance minister also said CNPC, which was not immediately available for comment, had agreed to postpone repaying its previous loans for five years.

China is Sudan's most important trading partner apart from Gulf Arab countries and the biggest investor in the local oil industry.

Sudan has been struggling with a severe economic crisis since losing three quarters of oil production when South Sudan seceded in July 2011. Oil revenues were the biggest source for state revenues and foreign currency needed to fund food imports.

Rep. Tim Scott picked to replace DeMint in Senate

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Rep. Tim Scott to the U.S. Senate on Monday, making him the South's first black Republican senator since Reconstruction in a state whose politics is steeped in the history of slavery and Civil War.

"It speaks to the evolution of South Carolina and our nation," Scott, 47, said of his appointment to fill the seat vacated by Sen. Jim DeMint, a conservative who reigned his post with four years left in his second term to head a right-leaning think tank.

Haley, a daughter of Indian immigrants who became South Carolina's first female and minority governor in 2010, acknowledged making history with her appointment, but she stressed that she picked Scott for his conservative values.

"He earned this seat for what I know he's going to do in making South Carolina and our country proud," she said.

Scott, 47, will be sworn in Jan. 3. Senate Republicans welcomed the appointment, which comes more than a month after Republicans' poor performance with minorities in the election forced soul-searching in the party to broaden its appeal.

He'll become only the fourth black Republican in Senate history and the only black Republican in Congress, after Rep. Allen West of Florida lost his re-election bid last month.

"This is truly an historic moment for the Palmetto State from a governor who's broken more than a few barriers in her own career," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., one of two Hispanics in the Senate, called Scott "a passionate, thoughtful and sincere advocate for the people of South Carolina and for limited government principles."

Scott is certain to be front and center when Republicans talk about fiscal matters and other issues vital to the conservative base. It remains to be seen what committee assignments he will get. He had served on the House Rules Committee.

Scott's selection culminates a fast rise through South Carolina politics. Just four years ago, he was chairman of the Charleston County Council. The 2008 election made him the first black Republican in the South Carolina Legislature in more than a century, and in 2010, he won his seat in the U.S. House from his conservative coastal district with 65 percent of the vote.

Outside the Statehouse where Scott spoke, a statue still stands of post-Reconstruction former governor and U.S. senator Ben Tillman, who unapologetically advocated lynching any black who tried to vote. Another statue depicts the late Strom Thurmond, who still holds a record for a 24-hour filibuster of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

But Scott has never dwelled on his race.

"I've never heard on the campaign trail, 'Besides the fact you're black or because you're black, here's what we want of you.' They asked me questions about values and issues, and that's an amazing thing. It speaks to the evolution of South Carolina and our nation," Scott said.

Scott will serve for two years and then face an election in November 2014. That would give South Carolina two Senate elections: one for Scott and the other for two-term Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.

"I have no doubt he'll fly through 2014," Haley said of Scott.

Scott said he still believes in term limits and would likely limit himself to two terms in the Senate, starting with 2014.

After asking for a moment of silence for the victims of the Connecticut school shooting, Scott said he accepted the challenge of trying to help the country through troubling times.

"Our nation finds itself in a situation we need backbone. We need to make some very difficult decisions," Scott said. "I learned early in my 20s that if you have a problem with spending, there's not enough revenue to make up for it. We have a spending problem in America."

Scott grew up in poverty in North Charleston. His parents divorced when he was 7, and he remembered his mom working 16 hours a day to support him and his brother.

"To the single moms out there, don't give up on your kids. It may get tough. It may be challenging, but all things are truly possible," he said.

In high school, he said he was failing four courses and in danger of "flunking out of high school" until he met the late John Moniz, a conservative entrepreneur who ran a Chick-fil-A beside the movie theater where Scott worked.

They became friends and Scott said Moniz taught him important values and basic business principles.

Scott earned a degree in political science from Charleston Southern University, which is affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention and touts how it integrates faith into learning and serving.

Graham, South Carolina's senior senator, said Scott has a unique opportunity to inspire others and be a leading voice for the conservative cause.

"When it comes to trying to explain what America's all about, I could not tell a better story than the story of Tim Scott," Graham said. "Tim is what America's all about."

The governor won't name a replacement for Scott. By state law, U.S. House vacancies are filled through a special election.

Things may finally be looking up for US manufacturing, James Fallows argues in the December issue of The Atlantic.?

Even in its battered condition, the American manufacturing sector is still the largest in the world, but its share of the US economy has declined from 20 percent in the early 1980s to just over 10 percent today. In the process, many high-paying jobs moved to China and other lower-wage countries, while Rust Belt communities in the United States were hard hit.

Two trends are likely to get trade winds blowing toward America again, Mr. Fallows contends. First, new technologies emerging in the US, such as 3-D printing, make it easier and faster to design, build, and refine products. Three-dimensional printing allows firms to use computerized molding systems to produce prototypes in minutes or hours. ?A revolution is coming to the creation of things, comparable to the Internet?s effect on the creation and dissemination of ideas,? one industrial design expert told Fallows.

At the same time, tumultuous changes in China are reducing its manufacturing advantages, complicating life for outsourcers and exporters. ?In China, wages are rising, workers are becoming choosier, public resistance to environmental devastation is growing, and the Chinese ?investment led? model is showing strain,? Fallows says.?

Apple?s new CEO

Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook talked extensively about management and corporate creativity in an interview with Bloomberg Businessweek editor Josh Tyrangiel.

Mr. Cook succeeded Apple?s late co-founder Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs was a major shareholder in the Walt Disney Company and had seen how executives there wasted time trying to figure out what Disney himself would have done after the founder of the company had passed away. Jobs ?removed a tremendous burden for me,? Cook says, by instructing, ?I never want you to ask what I would have done. Just do what is right.?

Apple has taken heat for poor working conditions at massive Foxconn Technology Group factories in China where many of its products are assembled. Cook told Businessweek that Apple would start producing one line of its Mac computers in the US in 2013 ? a modest sign of the brightening prospects for US manufacturing mentioned above.

Creativity, in Cook?s definition, is ?people who care enough to keep thinking about something until they find the simplest way to do it.? He laughed about corporate innovation departments saying that having one ?is always a sign that something is wrong ... you know, put a for sale sign on the door.?

Obama sits down with David Letterman - should Merkel take notes?

President Obama made a smart move by going on the Late Show with David Letterman, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel could benefit from something similar? if only she could pull it off.

By Rieke Havertz,?Contributor / September 19, 2012

Seated with talk show host David Letterman, U.S. President Barack Obama makes an appearance on the 'Late Show with David Letterman' at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, Tuesday.

Kevin Lamarque

Thanks to a heads up from the local news last night, I got to watch President Barack Obama on the "Late Show with David Letterman." I figured if it was big enough to make the nightly news I should watch, but I didn't expect much more than staged jokes, dull conversation, and campaign messaging.

But after the initial chitchat ended ? and President Obama had the audience on his side after cracking a joke about not wanting to see host David Letterman naked ? I understood why the president went on air with the late night host. I also wondered whether it was something German Chancellor Angela Merkel should consider when running for re-election next year.

The setting is perfect: It's free television time on a national level and gives the incumbent a big platform for presenting both his ideas and his personality. I didn't expect Mr. Letterman to let Obama talk about the national debt for more than three minutes, let alone the gridlock in Congress for almost four, but that's what he did.

For Obama it was a way to reach voters who might not be interested enough in politics to follow election coverage closely but enjoy their late night talk shows. His choice of words might have been simple ? referring to "two wars on a credit card" when talking about the national debt ? but his message, peppered as it was with stories about his children and the White House garden, stuck.

Germany has already adopted the US debate culture, so why not appear on talk shows too? Former Chancellor Gerhard Schr?der tried that when he appeared on the popular evening game show "Wetten, dass...?" ("Wanna bet this...?) in 1999, but it didn't really catch on with other politicians. Last year Chancellor Merkel turned down an offer to appear on the show, which was hosted by the popular Thomas Gottschalk until the end of last season.

Maybe it's because Merkel is not quite the hip politician Obama is and likes to keep her personal life private. But even though German elections are never as personality-driven as they are in the US, the candidates still need to appeal to voters, and this is an ideal way to do that.?

Take former Minister of Defense Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, who stepped down in 2011 after the disclosure that he had plagiarized his doctoral thesis. Even in the middle of that controversy, he remained one of the most popular politicians in Germany, partly because he knew how to spin the headlines with well-crafted appearances, showing up in an AC/DC T-shirt at a concert or getting his picture taken at tourist hub Times Square on a trip to the US.

Even if Merkel does not want to trade personal stories with Letterman like Obama did, appearing on a carefully chosen entertainment TV show and sharing just a little bit of about her personal life while going long on economic policy and government spending could be an easy way to get the message out to the average Joe ? or in this case, Otto Normalverbraucher.

Rumors are that Mr. Gottschalk is planning a comeback with a show airing on public broadcaster ARD. That could be a nice match.

Counting carbon: Pre-industrial emissions make a difference

Wednesday, July 4, 2012

When evaluating the historic contributions made by different countries to the greenhouse gasses found in Earth's atmosphere, calculations generally go back no further than the year 1840. New research from Carnegie's Julia Pongratz and Ken Caldeira shows that carbon dioxide contributions from the pre-industrial era still have an impact on our climate today. Their work is published in Environmental Research Letters.

The burning of fossil fuels that came with industrialization released massive amounts of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which has caused global warming. But clearing forests and other wild areas for agricultural purposes also contribute to atmospheric carbon dioxide, and that has been happening since before industrialization.

When unmanaged land is cleared for farming, part of the carbon is released immediately into the atmosphere as a result of burning. The rest of the carbon, including that from roots and wood products, releases carbon as the wood decays over years and centuries, meaning that carbon from pre-industrial activities is still being emitted into the atmosphere. Furthermore, a part of carbon dioxide emissions remain in the atmosphere for many centuries, because the ocean and vegetation on land absorb carbon dioxide only slowly over time. As a result, there is a warming effect long after the initial clearing of land.

"The relatively small amounts of carbon dioxide emitted many centuries ago continue to affect atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and our climate today, though only to a relatively small extent," Pongratz, who is now at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, said. "But looking into the past illustrates that the relatively large amount of carbon dioxide that we are emitting today will continue to have relatively large impacts on the atmosphere and climate for many centuries into the future."

Moreover, the effect of accounting for pre-industrial emissions can have important consequences for the amount of climate change attributed to certain regions. In some regions, such as North America, preindustrial clearing is only a small part of the total carbon picture because such massive quantities have been released by burning fossil fuels. But in other regions, particularly China and India, the ratio of preindustrial to industrial emissions is high.

The world's population increased about five-fold between 800 and 1850 AD and half that growth occurred in China and India. This led to substantial deforestation in the preindustrial era. On the other side of the coin, cumulative post-industrial fossil fuel carbon emissions for these nations are relatively low, only reaching substantial levels in recent years.

Using advanced models, Pongratz and Caldeira determined that accounting for pre-industrial emissions shifts attribution of global temperature from industrialized nations to developing nations by up to 2 to 3 %. For example, the study found that considering emissions from pre-industrial land-use change increases the amount of total global warming that can be attributed to emissions from South Asia (a region that includes India) from 5.1% to 7% -- an increase of 37% in the amount previously attributed to this region. Emissions from North America, Europe, and the former Soviet Union have caused more than half of all global warming, even though fewer people live in those regions combined than live in India alone.

The researchers note that their work is not intended to increase the blame on people living in the developing world today for our current climate problems based on what their ancestors did centuries ago, particularly considering the much larger climate impact being made by modern industrialized nations on a daily basis.

"Accounting systems are not natural facts, but human inventions," Caldeira said. "Once an accounting system is defined, it becomes a matter of scientific investigation to determine what numbers should go in the ledger, but broader questions of who is responsible for what and who owes what to whom are judgments that lie outside the scope of science."

UK judge rules HTC doesn't violate Apple's patents, invalidates Cupertino's claims

UK judge rules HTC doesn't violate apple's patentsWell, Apple had a few legal victories over the last couple of weeks, but it's just been handed a significant defeat by Judge Christopher Floyd. The UK court handed down a ruling that HTC does not violate four Apple patents, including the infamous slide-to-unlock claim. What's more, the judge ruled that three of the four patents in question were not valid, among them the aforementioned unlocking design. The only one of the four patents that stood at the end of the day was related to scrolling through images in the photo management app, but HTC did not infringe upon the claim. This follows the ITC refusing an emergency ban on HTC products in the US. Don't think you've heard the last of slide-to-unlock, however. As HTC, Apple and Samsung have repeatedly shown, they're just as interested in competing in the court room as they are on store shelves (if not more so).

Rusty memories rejuvenated in elderly mice

Forgetfulness that accompanies the march of time may be reversible ? in mice at least. Elderly mice have had their faltering memories restored after receiving extra amounts of an enzyme that switches genes on or off in the brain.

"We found they performed just like young animals," says Hilmar Bading of the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

He and his colleagues injected a virus directly into the brain's hippocampus ? an area responsible for memory. The virus contained extra copies of a gene that makes an enzyme called DNA methyltransferase (Dnmt3a2). This enzyme alters gene activity through methylation, the addition of chemical methyl groups to DNA.

The team then gave the mice a series of memory tasks. They were presented with an object, then a day later they were presented with the same object and a novel one. Because young mice remember seeing one of the objects before, they spent more time investigating the novel one. Elderly mice generally spent the same amount of time on each.

When elderly mice were given the virus, they matched the young mice in the task, spending 70 per cent of their time investigating the new object.

When the researchers used similar techniques to halve the amount of Dnmt3a2 that young mice produce, their performance deteriorated to that of non-treated elderly mice. "Clearly, if you have too little of the enzyme, your memory works less well," says Bading.

As yet, there is no drug that could boost levels of Dnmt3a2 in the human brain, but Bading says that more of it gets made naturally when the brain is active.

So while his team intend to investigate possible memory-enhancing treatments, his advice to people as they age is to keep their brains and bodies as active as possible.

Twitter to bring ?Death to America?! Twitter as a Terrorist tool?

Gizmodo and the Danger Room, reported today that government agencies are worried of the potential of terrorist organizations to use sites like twitter to coordinate terror strikes.

Twitter would of course make an easy anonymous platform for members of Hezbollah or Al Quaida to coordinate some sort of suicide bombing.

Each person would just need a phone, laptop, or other mobile device with access to a mobile or wifi network.

Army intelligence has come up with a few scenarios that a terrorist organization could utilize social network sites like twitter, as well as other cellphone features and programs.

Some of the topics brought up in the report include: Using mobile phone camera's to monitor 'the enemy'; Using the gps of some mobile phones for markmanship, border crossings, etc...; The installation of voice modification software to disguise the voice of would be terrorists.

The presentation also looking into a discussion on how militants may pair mobile applications with Twitter to expand their resources.

Similar to the way Twitter was used as a countersurveillance tool by activists during the Republican National Convention, the activists tweeted about the movement of Local Law Enforcement in real-time.

The presentation lays out three major scenarios.

Scenario 1: Terrorists send messages back and forth, regarding how, where, and number of troops that are moving around, in order to conduct an ambush.

Scenario 2: Terrorists uses mobile phone to signal remote explosive devices, or to coordinate remote detonation by a third party based on near real-time movement and imagery.

Scenario 3: Cyber terrorists find a U.S. soldiers Twitter account, he gains information from the soldier, and uses the information for identity theft, hacking, and possible physical attacks. This scenario could play out any and all major social networks...

How To Put Customer Service Tips To Work For You

Because we?re all buyers, we all know how important customer service is?both as buyers and business people. If you want your own business to give people good experiences, you need to give people the very best customer service that you can. What you need to figure out is how to find the willingness to stick with it. It?s kind of strange that the owners of more businesses don?t offer this as well?perhaps they don?t care as much? You are going to lose a lot of business if you do not have the proper customer service skills. Each of the following tips can help you offer truly superior customer service to the people who want to buy from you.

If you?re trying to see through satellitedirectreviewsx.net really stop for a minute! Do not be too hard on your self. Guideline number 1 is to not push yourself way too hard.

There is a code of ethics that you need to make sure your customer service agents follow. There are different concerns for customer service because they deal with your customers. You need to make a concentrated effort in this area because you do not want the people who already buy from you to start buying from somebody else. Each customer you have needs to be offered the same reliable and customer service message; it?s incredibly important that this happens. Customer service employees are very special ambassadors for your company. Each time they talk to customers or potential customers, there is an opportunity available. You can really reap the positive benefits that will encourage people to stick with your business.

You could actually have a one-person customer service department if your company is small. Even if it is small, you need to be productive in regard to what you do with this department. And, as you probably know, your customer service staff is only as good as how much you try to empower them every day. If there are any laws in your particular neighborhood, or any policies and documents that you need to have, make sure you have them readily available. Regardless of whatever your industry may be, the daily tasks should be relevant and specific to that niche. Dealing with broader issues which are more general is something that you will have to take into consideration. If you want to simplify things, your customer service staff can help you get there. So be sure to return the favor and support them as much as possible.

Accomplishing www.satellitedirectreviewsx.net can be be extremely problematic considering that there is not a lot advice available.

The way that you interact with your existing customers and potential customers is through the customer service department that works. One reason for that is many businesses only post contact information for them. The information that will tell them how to contact this department should be posted. The business you are in should stay clear of scams and other devious business models that could potentially harm your employees and business too. It is imperative that your customer service team be advised of anything new making the rounds. And, beware of businesses trying to get a toehold into yours. Most of these are just scams. So it is imperative that your employees learn to recognize the signs of possible intent to harm your company.

Maybe you are already implementing some of these tips for your own business. That?s all right because you never know when you will stumble across something you don?t know. Even knowing about them is going to help you start thinking about the things you need to think about. You can do so much more when you put your mind to it.

Not surprisingly this url is truly the best source of information regarding this.

Comfacts Social Media Registry Service Makes its Debut Online ...

NEW YORK, May 18, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ --? New2u Inc. announced today the launch of its new directory service, Social Media Registry, under the name of Comfacts. ?Comfacts is designed to help companies list and showcase their official social media profiles and corporate information. It provides a one-stop solution for users to find company-owned social media accounts.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120518/CG10333)

Comfacts Social Media Registry website:? http://comfacts.com

Companies around the world increasingly face the challenge of selecting the most appropriate and effective social media platforms to communicate with customers. They also need to be aware of false social media accounts and profiles by impersonators. ?While capitalizing on social media proliferation, companies must efficiently manage their online profiles and information. ?New2u Inc. believes that Comfacts addresses these business needs by becoming the ideal destination for managing companies' social media presence.??

What is Comfacts?

Comfacts Social Media Registry is a user-generated directory of company-owned social media accounts. Anyone in the general public as well as company representatives and employees can create a Comfacts account to update links to corporate social media accounts.

Comfacts was coined to combine the words "facts" and "comfort." ?News2u has created Comfacts Social Media Registry to offer a new kind of user generated content in social media in an environment where both general users and companies comfortably collaborate. ?Through combining what companies want to deliver with participation of internet users, Comfacts is designed to serve as a new communication venue.??????

How does it work?

From its outset, Comfacts has had social media account lists for more than 2,000 companies. ?These lists await corporate managers of those companies to sign in, verify and approve the accounts. ?Approved accounts display an approval seal icon.

In the meantime, any visitors to Comfacts can register and add the links of social media accounts of any company in the Comfacts Social Media Registry. ?If a particular social media account is not listed, then the user may add the account. ?But once companies verify and approve the list of accounts, users can no longer add accounts to the list without companies' approval.

What are the benefits?

  1. General Users and Press (bloggers, journalists, and media): easily find company-owned social media accounts in one location
  2. Corporate Users: effectively manage official listing of social media accounts

Comfacts will continue to evolve to better serve businesses' internet-based PR & Marketing needs.????
